Taking the Lead: Merkel and Hollande in Surprise Visit to Moscow

French President François Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are traveling to Moscow on Friday, February 6, in an effort to negotiate a new peace proposal to end the Ukrainian conflict. The draft is based “on the full territorial integrity of Ukraine,” according to Hollande. In the meantime, NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, announced plans for a long-term “spearhead force” against the “Russian risk”. France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK agreed to provide the brigades and logistics necessary for the 5,000 troops rapid reaction force.
